Meet The Ancestors

On 6th May, during our latest well-attended meeting, committee member Gill Blanchard adjudicated Norwich Writers’ Circle’s Writing Family History competition.

The professional historian, who set the competition earlier in the year, commented that not all 12 entries had meet her criteria. Gill added that some of the entrants had mixed fact and fiction, which she found confusing, as there had been awlward uncomfortable shifts in tone. The committee member also said that she had found also herself questioning certain statements included in the text, as there was not always facts to back them up.

The adjudicator went to say that the all the entrants made good reads, and on many occasions, cliche had been avoided. We then heard Gill’s brief, but thorough, summary of the entries, including a sample section of the best bits.

The winners were then announced as:

1st – A Hidden Life by Andrew Heron

2nd  Р1918 by Jacqueline Lee

3rd – Lost Heritage by Anastasia Pope

Runner-Up – Mannings by John Halligan

Runner-Up – The Reverend Alexander Henderson by Anne Funnell

NWC next meets on 20th May when we will be welcoming the UEA’s Director of Creative Writing. Andrew Cowan, who is also an acclaimed novelist, will be holding a characterisation and structure workshop.

We look forward to seeing you then.
