Alexander Gordon Smith

On 1st April Norwich Writers’ Circle welcomed best-selling young adult author Alexander Gordon Smith to another one of its well-attended meeting.

During a fun and humour-filled evening the Norwich-based writer discussed his literary career to date, covering the 21 lessons he has learnt as a writer. Gordon also went on to reference his experience working with agents and editors, along with his key role in establishing Egg Box Publishing.

The visiting writer then went on to enthusiastically launch our latest competition. In this competition entrants must write the opening chapter(s) to a young adult ‘high concept‘ novel.

Gordon emphasised that he would like read a fast-paced opening to the novel in which we learn the central character’s goals and faults, plus any potential conflicts are explored. The story must also be easy to pitch and marketable using a couple of sentences. If we wish, the pitch can also be included with our competition entry.

NWC next meets on 15th April at The Assembly House when we will be holding one of our ever-popular Manuscript Evenings. Members and visitors are encouraged to bring along a sample of their work to read aloud and to hear constructive criticism from our welcoming writing group.

We look forward to seeing you then.
