On 5th November Norwich Writers’ Circle welcomed multiple prize-winning poet and former member Anne Sanderson to another one of our well-attended meetings.

Anne, who has had 400+ poems published in magazines, national competition and small press anthologies, launched our latest poetry competition. In addition to this, the former Writers’ Circle regular has also had short stories featured in magazines, heard her work on BBC Radio Norfolk, and had a one act play read by actors at The Maddermarket Theatre. Our guest speaker was also an academic, who taught European literature at the UEA.

The evening opened with Anne discussing how, from a young age, she enjoyed writing poems and have she felt they could be used to make profound comments on the human condition. She later went on to explain that her own writing was in a variety of styles, some of which were comical, whilst others were more serious in tone.

Following Anne’s talk, a variety of poetry forms were then described to us. These forms – roundeau, triolet and cinquain – are the what we must use for our forthcoming competition entries. For the competition we can either write 1 rondeau, 2 triolets or up to 4 cinquains. To read Anne’s brief descriptions of these poetry styles please go here.

Before an interesting discussion of the nature and style of poetry, we were given the opportunity to try and write a cinquain. Some of these cinquains were then read aloud to an appreciative audience, leading to further entertaining dialogue within our group.

NWC next meets on 19th November when we will be holding another one of our popular Manuscript Evenings. Members and guests are encouraged to bring along a sample of their work to read aloud and to hear constructive criticism from our welcoming writing group.

We hope to see you then.
