A Life Less Ordinary

WordPress Phyllida Scrivens Forester Article January 2013

NWC Committee member Phyllida Scrivens is in her second semester of an MA postgraduate degree in Biography at the UEA.  Her biographical subject is Joe Stirling, 88, a German Jewish refugee and well-known long time Norwich resident.

As a result of research for her first assignment, Phyllida appealed to a local newspaper in Gloucestershire, The Forester, resulting in a number of correspondents with memories of Joe as a 15 year old schoolboy, evacuated to Lydney, including Hazel Allsopp herself, the only remaining survivor from Joe’s story from during World War II.  Following these responses, the Editor of the Forester requested a feature article, which was published on 6th February and is available to read in full here.

Phyllida says, “I am hoping that this article will result in further people with memories of Lydney in the war years getting in touch.  Every memory adds colour and life to Joe’s biography, which I hope will be published sometime in 2014”.

Congratulations from everyone at Norwich Writers’ Circle.
